Mississippi police on Wednesday shot and killed a woman who was caught on camera holding a Walmart employee hostage in a tense shootout.
According to officers and footage of the incident, 21-year-old Korlunda McGinister was fatally shot by officers inside the mega store’s Richland location after she pleaded to speak with a news anchor.
Richland police reported on social media Wednesday about a “weapon-involved incident at Walmart” around 5:45 p.m., and then released another report hours later that there was an “officer-involved shooting” inside the chain store .
In the footage going viral online, it is seen that a woman is making a specific demand with a gun in her hand.
“Hey, give me a news anchor here right now,” the woman said, using her other hand to hold the hostage.
“I need help, I need help,” she said, according to the footage. “Give me a news anchor down here.”
The woman also said that she had no intention of hurting anyone. As per the video, he resisted calls to let the woman go during the horrific incident.
The woman said, “I’m not trying to hurt anyone.” “Give me a news anchor.”
The footage showed police officers repeatedly demanding that she drop her gun as she continued to push for a news anchor.
Richland Police Chief Nick McLendon Told WAPT a stressful incident was “devastating” for all.
“This is devastating for all parties involved — the officers, everyone who was involved in this situation,” McLendon said.
“You know, with the Christmas season coming up, mental health is a big deal because of the stress involved in the Christmas season.”
No one else was injured in the firing, he said.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
Walmart reopened on Thursday, According to WLBT.
The news station reported that law enforcement was deployed inside and outside the Walmart to make shoppers feel safe.
