Story: The Rise and Fall of the King

Run Time: 159 Minutes

If Luhrmann’s direction is one wheel of this stellar Rolls-Royce of a film, Austin Butler’s performance as Presley and Tom Hanks as his manager Colonel Tom Parker are the other two. Fourth Wheel is the story: dizzying stratospheric ascents, sexy rebellion, marriage and parenthood, addiction to prescription pills, recognizable bloat and accidents, all of which coincide with some of the biggest events in American history. The story of Elvis Presley is also the story of America in the ’50s and ’60s.

The fabric and soundtrack are an added sweetener to this already irresistible journey. Glittering rhinestones on hats, monogrammed dressing gowns, sparkling sunglasses, sinewy scarves… and who could have imagined a pink suit that could radiate so much raw sex appeal?

Beginning in 1997 on Parker’s death bed, Elvis goes back to the beginning when Parker was managing a country concert, and heard this new singer whose song is playing on the radio across town. When she is told that the singer is a white boy singing in the African-American tradition, Parker is determined to be her manager.

He does and keeps Presley firmly on the road to success. While Elvis’s tricks drive the youth crazy, they drive the elders and establishment into another kind of mad with concern over his corrupting influence. After enlisting in the military to escape a prison sentence, Presley returns to becoming a movie star. Marriage, parenthood, a super-successful retreat, a lengthy residency in Vegas and death at age 42 (from a heart attack) takes us through Presley’s king-size life in the film. It’s all happening under the shadow of a Swengli-like Parker.

Butler is every bit Presley, from his cupid’s bow lips and his thick long eyelashes to the quiff; And boy, does he walk! Hanks Parker is as far removed from the caricature as Butler Presley is. He makes it impossible to dismiss Parker as the villain of the piece. These two huge performances mean that one can be forgiven for ignoring all the others, who are equally capable.

From Helen Thomson and Richard Roxburgh, who play Presley’s parents, to Olivia DeJong, who plays his wife Priscilla, Calvin Harrison Jr. as Bibi King and Elton Mason as Little Richard, they all breathe life into their characters. give.

One cannot talk of a Baz Luhrmann film without talking about its music and here too, you have musicians including Doja Cat, Menskin, Casey Musgraves, Eminem, Ceelo Greene, Stevie Nicks, Jack White, Diplo and Sway Lee who is covering and contributing original music. In addition to Butler’s great rendition of Presley’s songs.

This is the kind of movie you can’t help falling in love with… and it certainly won’t be a sin.
