A three-year-old Chicago boy was fatally shot in the head over the weekend after his mother tried to flee a horrific road rage attack, police said.
Mateo Zastro was sitting next to his siblings in the back seat of his mother’s SUV when a gunman opened fire in the city’s West Lawn neighborhood at around 8.30 p.m. Friday.
Police said the family had just left a shopping mall when the mother of the little boy had a confrontation with an unidentified driver, ABC7 told,
It was not immediately clear what caused the road rage collision.
According to police, the mother tried to run away from the vehicle, but the suspect followed her and started firing “several shots” at her vehicle.
The little boy was shot in the head and hours later was pronounced dead at Christ Hospital.
His three siblings and mother were not injured.
“That mom is still sad. She’s only holding two dinosaurs … the child’s favorite toy,” said Andrew Holmes, a community worker who spent hours with the bereaved family over the weekend.
He is offering a $7,000 reward for information about the suspect responsible for Matteo’s murder.
“We can get these child killers off the streets,” Holmes said.
According to police, investigators are currently reviewing surveillance videos to track down the shooter.
They are looking for a red Dodge Charger or red Ford Mustang.
