State Department warns Americans with dual citizenship to leave Russia immediately so they are not forced to fight of Vladimir Putin war in ukraine
US Embassy in Moscow issued a security alert Tuesday advising personnel about Putin’s efforts to draft the Russians into the seven-month-old war. I
“On September 21, the Russian government began mobilizing its citizens into the armed forces in support of its invasion of Ukraine,” the alert said. I
“Russia may refuse to accept dual citizens’ US citizenship, deny them access to US consular assistance, block their departure from Russia, and appoint dual citizens for military service, “It said.
The embassy noted that commercial flights out of the country are “extremely limited” and “often unavailable at short notice.”
“The underground passages by car and bus are still open. If you wish to depart from Russia, you should make independent arrangements as soon as possible. There are severe limitations on the US Embassy’s ability to assist US citizens, and situations, including transportation options, may suddenly become even more limited,” it said.
It also warned Americans against traveling to Russia and advised those living in the country “to leave Russia immediately if limited commercial travel options remain.”
The embassy noted that the rights to peaceful assembly and free expression are not guaranteed in Russia, advising Americans to avoid anti-mobilization protests. I
“Russian authorities have arrested American citizens who took part in the demonstrations,” it noted.
